A few years ago, I worked on a motion design project that was displayed on a massive digital billboard in Hollywood, California. Sonic the Hedgehog certainly pushed my skills and taught me how to think beyond your typical 1x1 Instagram video. I had to consider scale, pacing, file format, and playback environment — all while keeping the animation clean, intentional, and exciting for an audience driving by at 35 mph.
The project came with a tight turnaround and complex file prep — both of which required extra energy and planning before jumping into the design. I worked from layered Photoshop key art, restructuring the assets for animation in After Effects. The motion had to be subtle enough to loop cleanly, but still dynamic and engaging, especially for kids.
This project reminded me how much technical knowledge motion designers bring to the table — we’re not just animators, we’re problem-solvers. Working across platforms, devices, and media types takes strategy and flexibility.
I’m grateful to have contributed to a piece that reached so many people in the real world. I love partnering with brands that care about both creative storytelling and making a bold visual impact.
